How to Customize Your Medium Profile with Your Own Aesthetics
A simple step-by-step tutorial on customizing your Medium profile.
Medium has changed a lot since I discovered it back in 2019. Other features were added, including letting Medium creators have their own sub-domain and customizing profiles.
Giving Medium writers the option to customize their own profiles takes me back to my Friendster days — if you don’t know what that is you’re probably way younger than I am.
This online writing platform is really a safe space I enjoy writing in, but it’s definitely not a stable source of income.
Have you seen the percentage of writers who earns more than $100 a month? Not a lot.
Although, I almost made it in my first month.
I published 32 articles that month. I wish it was a brag but it’s not. I was new and just pumping out articles left and right — articles that could have made me actual money if I had the experience and knowledge I have now.
Regardless, Medium is a great platform for extra income or to have a broader audience for your main services and products if that’s your route.
Though, it’s best for self-improvement and personal essay types articles.
With that, if you want your profile to reflect more of what you write about or even your personality — here’s how to do it.
How to Customize Your Medium Profile
- Go to your profile and click the three dots on the far right of your Medium profile name and then click Design your profile.
2. Play with the options bar on the left side of the screen.
You can choose any background color, font, and header that you want. It even gives you the option of adding a Blogroll.
Personally, I didn’t change Medium’s default font. It was chosen by the creators for a reason — it’s readable, and Medium is a writing platform but a reading website.
But, it’s your profile and your aesthetics. So you do you.
When your Blogroll box is checked, the people who are reading your articles on Medium can see who you are following, including Medium publications.
If you want to turn off your Blogroll, just uncheck the box on its drop-down menu.
3. Upload your header design on the Color drop-down menu.
There is always an option of just choosing a plain-colored background. You can try matching the color of your profile and header to see if that works for you.
I opted to make my own and you can too.
Just be careful with the sizing of your header image. Mine is obviously cut, but I love my bird.
4. Upload a logo on the Color drop-down menu.
On the same menu, there are 2 choices with which that name would appear on your Medium profile — Text or Logo.
With the picture above, you can see my profile name plastered below the header. If you choose to change it to a logo, just click on the circle next to it.
Interestingly, you can only either have an uploaded header or logo. There is only one option to upload an image.
So, if you’re choosing an uploaded image for your header then you would only have the option of having your profile name in there.
You can also change the color of your profile name.
How I made my header on Medium
There are many photo editing options out there, and I don’t doubt there’s a lot more coming out with the increase of demand in digital marketing.
Customizing your Medium profile the way you want to shouldn’t be stressful in the sense that you’d have to learn photo editing skills from the ground up.
My profile header was made on Canva. Yes, the free version.
Users might not get the exact image of what they want for their profile header, but they still have great features and free images and graphics.
Just have a mental image of what aesthetics you’re going for. Layer them down to individual pieces, then search them on Canva.
For example, I really want mine to have a funky feel to it. So for the background, I searched ‘hippy backgrounds’ and put that on the blank canvass.
Then, I searched for everything I like that would go well with that background.
Like that picture of a bird that looks exactly like my grandma’s!
